Hyphen or an Underscore!

When it comes to search engine optimization, we all are aware that what to choose, as keywords and what not to choose.

There is a common belief that if you have to name the internal pages of your website, then you should take keywords for the same (business specific), by considering the following things,
As Featured On EzineArticles

  • Check the theme of the page and select the keyword reflecting the webpage,
  • The keyword selected should be the popular keyword and
  • By creating the category(ies) in the form of top navigation, left or right navigation along with the footer links, as important business related keywords.

The point to be noted here is, that keywords should be inserted but the important thing to be taken into consideration is that it should not make the webpage spammy.

What to choose, "a Hyphen or an Underscore" while naming the internal webpages for the site?

This is the very basic and important question which should be answered before naming the webpages for the website. The point as discussed above is to keep the keywords, as the internal webpage URL, in order to circulate the keyword.

Now comes the three situations and to choose which is the best as far as the SEO point of view is concerned,

  • Two Keywords (or 3 Keywords) - joining them without a space, or
  • Two Keywords (or 3 Keywords) - seperating them with an underscore, or
  • Two Keywords (or 3 Keywords) - seperating them with a hyphen

There is the following drawback if we consider the first point, I.e., joining two words without space, underscore or hyphen.

Before discussing the above point we should remember one thing in mind, that "as a user will I be typing that word without space? or will I be interested in such long search term query". Based on this the explanation to the joined keywords is, that 1 user in 100's or 1000's will come and try to put that type of search term, so unless and until the keyword chosen is extremely popular its not worth to use it.

Now we should see the Underscore and the Hyphen stuff. Both Undersocre and the Hyphen are an appropriate way to name your webpages using keywords. Both are used to segregate one word into meaningful words.

But we have one basic thing associated with underscores, and that an underscore may just merge with the line, whereas a hyphen can't. In laymen language a hyphen looks and makes the webpage more readable and easy for navigation to the visitors as compared to the underscore.

The bottom line is you can use hyphen for the inner webpages and also the underscores, but my preference goes with the hyphen, as I did Google search for some keyword by using a hyphen and an underscore. And I got two different search results,

  1. with Hyphen it was cool, in the sense that those two words were treated as different when I placed hyphen, and
  2. with Underscore it was different, and I got a message as to saying that am I looking for a different keyword.

Google - Site Links

Google always shows the most relevant results for the search query by it's users, and this time it's typically based on the more informative pages based on the search term regarding the queries.

The Concept behind Site Links
Google is displaying important pages from your site in the form of Site Links. Site Links are the way to display the information based on the search query by the user, for the other pages in the website which Google thinks can provide or be beneficial to it's users.

The process of displaying the Site Links in the search results is completely automatic and Google creates the site links for your website, based on the information which a user wants by showing the most relevant pages from the website.

Just have a look by searching the domain/business of your website, and check the search results for the same. If your site links are not displayed then that simply means, the Site links for your website is not yet generated by Google.

The Google's way of displaying the sitelinks is completely algorithmic, which has nothing to do with your business. The links are displayed (if any) by first showing the web result for your business in the same manner, i.e.,

-- by displaying the Title, Description along with the display URL of your business; and after that the site links come.

Just do a google search for (ex infosys) and see the site links.

Upcoming Google Search Results Features

Google is doing the major search results updates in it's searches provided to the users. Recently Google launched the Google Search Wiki, wherein the user can add, remove and see all the notes for a specific search results, or write their own comments.

Like wise there are a many updates going on in the search results that will be displayed to the users. To name some of them,

Google's Search Wiki

First comes the search wiki itself, as when you are deleting the search result, the result will be deleted with a sound and with animation. But you need to have signed in to your google account to do all that for the search wiki.

Google's Alternate View for Search Results

Google will now provide an alternate view for the search results. That will be based on the following four criterios,
  • A List View
  • A Info View
  • A Timeline View
  • A Map View
List View - A list view is the normal view of the of the search results.

Information View - The Information view will provide another 5 segregated views based on
  1. Your search terms
  2. Dates
  3. Measurements
  4. Locations, &
  5. Images

Timeline View - The Timeline view will show the results specific to a certain period of time, i.e., in a specific period (eg from 1740 - 1750 only)

Map View - And lastly the map view, which clearly shows the location of that particular search result, in the Google Maps.

This sounds to be very innovative and interesting way to present the search resullt to the users, in so many different formats. It is still in the experimental phase, but it will be interesting to use these as a part of the search results.

Keyboard Shortcuts - Next comes the keyboard shortcuts, with the search results navigation made more easy.

Key --> Action

J --> Selects the next result.

K --> Selects the previous result.

O --> Opens the selected result.

Enter --> Opens the selected result.

/ --> Puts the cursor in the search box.

Escape --> Removes the cursor from the search box.

Magnified View - And while accessing the results via shortcuts, the navigated result will get a bigger and a magnified picture of the search results.

The following is the list provided in order to facilitate the navigational part of the search results,

Key --> Action

j or DOWN --> Selects the next item.

k or UP --> Selects the previous item.

l or RIGHT --> Moves to the next category (results, sponsored links, refinements).

h or LEFT --> Moves to the previous category (results, sponsored links, refinements).

Enter --> Opens the selected result.

/ --> Puts the cursor in the search box.

n --> Moves to the next result, and fetches more results if necessary.

p --> Moves to the previous result, reloading earlier results if necessary.

= --> Magnifies current item

- -->Shrinks current item

A --> Switches to Accessible Search Results

W --> Switches to regular Web Search Results

These are a great different ways to make the search more interesting and more informative and more unique. The user will be able to exactly know and get the exact information of what he will be looking for in the search engine. Let's see when is this going to happen.
